Being an embalmer, I have found over time that through the many questions posed to me, there are facets of this field which often remain unclear to the general public. Although part of life, death is not something regularly spoken of and its topic can seem to have the essence of ‘taboo’. However, as funeral directors, we have numerous opportunities to share what knowledge we have and to educate. When speaking to nursing students who periodically tour our resource and tribute centers as well as our chapels, we’re often asked questions based on work we have to do “behind the scenes”. When speaking of the preparation of a family’s loved one or of the funeral itself, it’s all about the variety of detail-oriented tasks that take place daily at our funeral home. The staff member who assists with a task such as parking cars the morning of a funeral can also be the same individual who prepared the decedent for whom that funeral is being held. This leads us into a definition of funeral service.  It is composed of the services offered for the dignified final disposition of the deceased, as well as being a tribute which is individualized to reflect the life of the person being remembered.  As funeral directors and embalmers we educate when opportunities arise, finding value in taking the time to provide answers to the best of our ability, and our services for the creation of an honorable life tribute.
