In 2003, the Safe Place To Grieve Foundation, a 501c3, was established with the vision of expanding our services, and making those services available to the general public, through grants and charitable donations. The D’Esopo-Pratt Resource Center provides the Safe Place To Grieve Foundation with shared use of office and other space to conduct its programs and services. The following programs and services are currently offered to the general public by the Safe Place To Grieve Foundation at the facilities of the D’Esopo-Pratt Resource Center, unless otherwise specified.* Please call for specific times and a further description of each group.
SERVICES AND COMMUNITY CALENDAR:
LENDING AND REFERENCE LIBRARY: We offer an extensive collection of reading and audiovisual materials, augmented annually to include the latest resources on death, dying, grief and loss. The library includes a professional section for application in schools, businesses, health care, pastoral care and more.
GRIEF EDUCATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAM: This program provides a foundation of information, education and support for grieving persons, their friends, family, community, as well as professional caregivers. The physical, emotional, social and spiritual reactions to bereavement are discussed, along with practical suggestions for coping and adapting to the changes and challenges that accompany loss.
HOLIDAY BEREAVEMENT AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS: Each day may be a challenge for those who grieve. Holidays may be especially difficult. Throughout the year, including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, and the winter holidays* of Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year, educational and memorial programs are offered to the community. * The winter holiday support program is held at the Pitkin Community Center in Wethersfield.
EVENING SUPPORT GROUPS:
MOURNING GLORIES: This is an ongoing, open-ended support group for younger women (30’s to 50’s), who are grieving the death of their husbands or life partners.
CIRCLE OF FRIENDS: This is an ongoing, open-ended educational and support group for adult men and women who are grieving the death of a loved one.
DAYTIME SUPPORT GROUPS:
TOGETHER, WE’LL GET THROUGH THIS! (East Hartford) This is an ongoing support group, in collaboration with VNA HealthCare, Inc., for adults grieving the death of a loved one. The group currently meets at East Hartford’s South End Senior Center 70 Canterbury St. East Hartford, CT (adults are welcome regardless of age).
TOGETHER, WE’LL GET THROUGH THIS! (Wethersfield) This is an ongoing support group for adults grieving the death of a loved one.
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Professional education and workshop presentations and consultations are offered to healthcare providers, school professionals, businesses, and other groups, on or off-site. A donation to the Safe Place To Grieve Foundation will be suggested depending upon the amount of time spent in preparation and deliverance of the program.
STUDENT INTERNSHIPS: Undergraduate and Graduate sociology, social work, gerontology, and counseling interns are welcome to apply for field placement at the D’Esopo-Pratt Resource Center. Students are supervised by a licensed clinician.
THE BARKLAY AND EVE GIFT SHOP: The Barklay and Eve gift shop offers a variety of cards, inspirational and thoughtful items available for purchase. Featuring the Barklay and Eve Children’s Book Series, written and illustrated by Karen L. Carney, proceeds from the gift shop will support the Safe Place To Grieve Foundation.
